Gyokukaku(玉殻) works are made by a technique that Akihiro Nikaido himself invented.  It is an incredibly beautiful piece with a unique texture and color expression. The glaze that melts in the kiln is magma from inside the earth, and the thin mud on top of it resembles the earth's surface. The vessel itself is the earth, and it seems to represent a moment in its eternal flow. If you look closely at the expression of this work, you will see that it contains a wide variety of different landscapes. There is no two pieces are the same. Although it is a piece designed as a flower vase, it is also a very beautiful piece as an interior object.

His works are characterized by beautiful and sophisticated lines and special earthy textures feeling the soil. Through repeated trial and error to determine the compatibility between soil and temperature, the works that he creates are all beautiful and sophisticated in their thinness and form, and are beautiful to the eye and give a pleasant earthy feel to the touch.

When Japan was economically rich and powerful, he was still a child and for some reason felt like an empty hole in his heart, wondering what he really wanted to do and what he could continue doing. As a
child, he thought about it one night, and decided to become a potter because he thought he could continue making pottery from clay.

When we visited his workshop, he told me the following words.
“I believe that the shapes that I find beautiful even if they were made a million years ago are probably the same today. I believe that beauty lies in simple shapes, and I create my works in pursuit of simplicity that I also find beautiful. I believe that such simple and beautiful things will be something that people
will still find beautiful 100 years from now."

He also left behind the following words:
“I feel like there is something like human nature in ceramics. The same goes for touching soil with your hands and shaping it. It can also be the same goes for firing works.
