TATSUYA HATTORI

ARTIST STORY

Tatsuya Hattori makes pottery in Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture.
His elementary school also had a gas kiln, and he grew up in an environment where he was exposed to ceramics on a daily basis, touching clay while crafting, firing my own works in the kiln, and making ceramics. However, he says that until he graduated from university, he was too familiar with ceramics to realize how good it was at that time. But once he started making pottery, he became obsessed with it. He says that he still makes his works as an extension of his passion.

Sophisticated curves and straight lines

The works created by his own hands have chic colors and create a very sophisticated atmosphere. He creates all of his pieces by himself, from start to finish. His pieces are filled with attention to detail, and are very sophisticated and beautiful in form, while also being very easy to use. The smooth atmosphere of each his piece is very comfortable and the curves add beauty to your daily life.

Some of his pieces have a vintage atmosphere that is rare in ceramics, achieved by intentionally oxidizing the silver to a black color and then carefully polishing it. As you use it, it will oxidize and take on a gold tinged color, allowing you to enjoy its change over time. He told us he enjoys creating products by mixing different materials, such as clay and silver color. He said that he wants to create works that don't look like pottery or other works that have never been seen and done before. He also said sometimes gets inspiration for his works from antique tools and architecture.

When we visited his workshop, we realized that his works, which have very sophisticated atmosphere, can be created by truly enjoying making his works and carefully crafting each piece by his hands.
