AKARI KARUGANE

ARTIST STORY

When we visited Akane Karugane's studio, we were greeted by her large vase.
We were captivated by the overwhelming presence of this work, so large that it seemed as if she could fit inside it. However, even this surprisingly large piece exudes her warm and gentle atmosphere.

The Warmth of Clay

We think the appeal of her work is the warmth of the earth that you can feel when you touch it, and the deep, soft colors that are not monochromatic but mixed. All of her works that come out of her hands are powerful and gentle.

There is no bisque firing step in the process of her work. The shapes made by hand or on a potter's wheel are not bisque fired, but left to harden naturally. Once they have hardened to a certain degree, she uses a sponge to dab on the pieces in various colors. Then the pieces are finally fired in an electric kettle or gas kiln.

During her time at the Tajimi Ceramic Design Institute, she worked hard to create pieces using a variety of materials, but she says she found that making pieces with clay was the best for her. Her beautiful pieces, created in places rich in nature, are imbued with her gentle, warm atmosphere.
