TEPPEI ONO

ARTIST STORY

Teppei Ono makes pottery in Kochi prefecture which is rich in nature, Japan.
He said "I hope that my works can become reliable things for those who see and touch them, affirming themselves and believing that they are fine in their own way." We interviewed him about now he has approached his works until now and his thoughts that are important to him.

Strong, gentle, delicate and bold

When he was young, many of his daily works were very aggressive and edgy.
To put it in the extreme, he did not think it matters even if his works hurt someone. All his works were full of sharp energy.
Due to the influence by Mr. Ryoji Koie, who was his master at the time, It was very important for him to be sharp myself and pour his huge energy into creating his works instantly. He thought that was everything at that time.

At a certain point, he realized the frustration of not being able to convey anything to others by his works.
He also began to think that nothing would change about the world or the discomfort he felt towards it with the same way.
After he turned 40, he realized that nothing had changed because of the violent emotions inside him and he began to feel that he needed a work that would envelop the other person.

Since then, he has thought that he should create works with feelings that embrace the other person, and this has led to his current work. Although the aggressive feelings and anger within him never went away, one day he changed the way he expressed his work through his body.
He says he has come to value kindness and open-mindedness that embraces others.
He hopes that people who see or touch his work can realize and affirm that they are okay by themselves through his works. Whether it‘s a teacup or a bowl, he continues to create his works with the hope that they will be objects that someone can believe in.
