SHOHEI ONO

SHOHEI ONO - KUROSHINO MIDDLE BOWL

Description

This work is made by Shohei Ono, who is a potter in Kami City, Kochi Prefecture. It features a sophisticated look that combines the matte black glaze with a metallic texture. It is strong due to repeated high-temperature firing, and can be used in the microwave. It is also a comfortable weight when held in the hand.

Please kindly note that each piece is handmade by the artist, so there are individual differences in appearance, size, and weight.

About Artist

Born in Aichi Prefecture in 1985, Shohei Ono has created his works as a potter in Kami City, Kochi Prefecture. After working as an office worker, he studied under the ceramic artist Koie Ryoji. After that in 2014, he began studying under his father, the ceramic artist Ono Teppei.

After going independent, he began mining clay in the mountains, burning wood, and making his own ash glazes to create his own works. He has studied the natural chemical reactions between clay, glazes, and repeated application of heat and creates works with his own unique expression.

By repeatedly firing the works, the iron in the clay seeps out to the surface, then mixes with the glaze to create deeper colors in each works. Overlaying these deep colors, the works are covered in a beautiful, highly transparent glassy texture.

This method of repeated firing is often avoided due to its high risk. However, he dares to take on the technique, and is passionate about the ever-changing expressions of the works depending on how the heat is applied, and creates strong vessel that is easy for users to use.

As a result, his works have a deep beauty and strength that is unlike any other. At the same
time, we can feel the comfortable weight when we held his works in our hand. His works gently welcomes any user and teaches us the joy of using as a tableware as well.

In this solo exhibition, Shohei Ono had presented his new work, 白銀 which is called "Shirogane". We hope you enjoy his beautiful works that weaved delicate and deep colors created by his strong hands.
